Literature from a different perspective

I enjoyed teaching French.....

I enjoyed teaching French and literature at the University of Haverford (Pennsylvania) more precisely « La symphonie Pastorale » by music-lover Gide. I enjoyed linking Gide’s novel with « Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony». When studying the excerpt where the blind main character discovers the world linking each music note to a color , I enjoyed seeing my students’ motivation and forthright repartees.

La littérature vue sous un angle différent

En effet la musique classique prend parfois part au récit. L’auteur utilise souvent les mots pour évoquer l’univers musical.

André Gide accompagne inlassablement ses œuvres d’un univers musical prononcé. La Symphonie Pastorale (1919), traduit la filiation qui existe entre musique et éducation, notamment au travers d’un passage de la Symphonie Pastorale de Beethoven où le personnage principal – aveugle –fait la découverte du monde en associant chaque note à des couleurs.
